Kenya and China sign deal for 80 off-grid solar systems at rural schools and clinics

The agreement, under China's Africa Solar Belt plan, targets places the national grid does not reach in Kilifi, Tana River and the Maasai Mara. No cost or capacity has been given.

In 30 seconds

  • Kenya and China signed a memorandum of understanding on Tuesday for off-grid solar power in remote areas.
  • The framework covers 80 solar systems for health clinics, community water supply and schools.
  • Possible sites are in Kilifi and Tana River counties and at Maasai Mara University.
  • UNICEF is supporting the project; no cost, capacity or start date has been published.

Kenya has signed an agreement with China to bring solar power to schools, clinics and water points in remote areas that the grid does not reach.

The deal

The memorandum of understanding was signed on Tuesday. China's ambassador to Kenya, Guo Haiyan, and Kenya's energy principal secretary, Alex Wachira, attended the signing, Capital FM and Citizen Digital reported.

It sets out a framework to install 80 off-grid solar photovoltaic systems. Possible sites include Kilifi and Tana River counties on the coast and Maasai Mara University. The systems are meant to power health clinics, community water supply and schools, including digital learning.

UNICEF is backing the project with technical help and matching funds, Citizen Digital reported. Its Kenya representative witnessed the signing.

Part of a wider plan

The project falls under China's Africa Solar Belt initiative, which China announced at the first Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi in 2023.

The Chinese embassy called the signing "an important step" for the project. Neither side has published the cost, the size of the systems, or when installation will start. An MoU is an agreement to proceed, not a contract, so those details should follow.

What it means for you

For a clinic or school far from the grid, a solar system with batteries can mean a fridge for vaccines, lights for evening study and a working water pump.

Nigeria's Rural Electrification Agency runs similar solar projects for schools, clinics and markets. When you read about deals like this one, look for three things: how much power each site gets, who pays to maintain the batteries after a few years, and when the panels actually go up.

Words to know

Off-grid
Not connected to the national electricity grid. Power comes from a local source such as solar panels and batteries.
Solar PV
Photovoltaic panels, which turn sunlight directly into electricity.
MoU
Memorandum of understanding, a formal agreement to work together. It is a first step, not a contract.
