Ghana lowers petrol and LPG price floors for early November, raises diesel
The National Petroleum Authority's floors for 1 to 15 November point to slightly cheaper petrol and cooking gas, but dearer diesel. A firmer cedi is softening the blow of high crude prices.
In 30 seconds
- Ghana's petrol price floor fell from GH¢16.09 to GH¢15.39 a litre for 1 to 15 November.
- The diesel floor rose from GH¢17.09 to GH¢17.41 a litre.
- The LPG floor dropped from GH¢13.89 to GH¢13.73 a kilogram.
- Floors are minimums. Actual pump prices depend on each marketer's margins.
Ghana's fuel regulator has set lower minimum prices for petrol and cooking gas for the first half of November, but a higher one for diesel. The new floors took effect on Sunday 1 November and run to 15 November.
The National Petroleum Authority cut the petrol floor by GH¢0.70 to GH¢15.39 a litre, a fall of about 4%. The LPG floor slipped by GH¢0.16 to GH¢13.73 a kilogram. Diesel went the other way, rising by GH¢0.32 to GH¢17.41 a litre.
The figures were reported by Citi Newsroom and Pulse Ghana on 28 October.
Why a floor, not a price
Ghana does not set a single pump price. The NPA publishes floors twice a month, which leave out the premiums charged by international traders and the margins of importers, distributors and filling station companies. Each company sets those under the national pricing formula.
That means the floor shows the direction of travel, not what you will pay. A marketer can sell above it but not below it.
What is moving prices
Crude prices remain high. The Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies said average crude rose about 2% in the previous window, to just under $127 a barrel on its measure, amid supply fears.
Against that, the cedi has gained ground. A stronger cedi makes imported fuel cheaper in local money, which helps explain why petrol and LPG floors could fall even with crude climbing.
In the previous window, from 16 October, petrol and diesel pump prices fell slightly while LPG rose.
What it means for you
If you live in Ghana, expect petrol and cooking gas to be a little cheaper at some stations in early November, though not every company will cut. Diesel users, including most lorries and generators, should brace for a small rise.
For Nigerian readers, Ghana's system is worth watching. Its prices change on fixed dates, twice a month, and the regulator publishes the floor in advance. In Nigeria, petrol prices now move whenever refiners, depots or stations decide, which makes changes harder to predict.
The next Ghana pricing window opens on 16 November.
