Energy in Brief: 2 November 2026

Nigeria's gas regulator rewrites the pipeline rulebook while South Africa's first gas-to-power tender ends with no winners.

In 30 seconds

  • NMDPRA launched a revised gas transport code meant to widen pipeline access for power and fertiliser plants.
  • South Africa's 2,000 MW gas-to-power tender closed with no preferred bidders after none could guarantee gas supply.
  • Kenya's current fuel prices, raised sharply in October, run until 14 November.

Nigeria

New rulebook for Nigeria's gas pipelines

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority has launched Revision II of the Nigerian Gas Transportation Network Code, the rules for putting gas into pipelines, measuring it and booking capacity. Chief executive Rabiu Umar signed it with power, fertiliser and shipping firms at an industry event in Lagos in late October. The aim is fairer access to pipelines for gas buyers. Umar said national gas transport capacity could double to 4.4 billion cubic feet a day once pipelines under construction are finished. Source: ThisDay

Petrol stocks below the 30-day mark

At the same event, Umar said Nigeria's petrol stock cover stood at 24 days, under the 30-day threshold the regulator wants. He said three in four litres of petrol used last month were refined in Nigeria, against more than half imported a year earlier. Thin stocks leave less room to absorb a supply shock before queues return. Source: Megastar Magazine

NUPRC gets a methane tracker

The upstream regulator, NUPRC, has taken over a digital emissions tracker built by the civil society group SDN with Global Methane Hub support. NUPRC says it will use the tool to enforce its 2022 methane rules and work toward a 60% cut in methane emissions by 2035. Tracking leaks and flaring better could also show how much gas is being wasted instead of sold to power plants. Source: NAN

South Africa's gas-to-power tender ends with no winners

South Africa's first bid window for 2,000 MW of gas-fired power closed with no preferred bidders, Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa said on 28 October. Four bids offering 2,830 MW came in, but none could give the long-term gas supply guarantees required. The country imports most of its gas from Mozambique and has no working LNG import terminal, and government says details of a new round will come before year-end. Source: Daily Maverick

Egypt's oil bid deadline is 11 November

Bids for six oil and gas blocks offered by Egypt's state oil company EGPC, in the Gulf of Suez, Sinai and the Western Desert, close at noon Cairo time on 11 November. A further eight gas blocks from EGAS, in the Mediterranean and Nile Delta, close on 14 December. The blocks are offered through the Egypt Upstream Gateway under production-sharing deals. Kenya's next fuel review due 14 November

Kenya's current pump prices, set by the regulator EPRA, run until 14 November. In the October review, super petrol rose by Sh12.93 a litre and diesel by Sh9.90, taking Nairobi petrol to Sh226.96. EPRA blamed higher import costs tied to Middle East tensions, so motorists will be watching whether the next review brings any relief. Source: Pulse Kenya
